Young Man or Woman Makonde Lipico Mask
Mipico (pl. of lipico) masks are used in performances that accompany coming of age ceremonies, such as the circumcision of young boys. Mipico masks are worn as part of a masquerade of various theatrical characters, such as soldiers, women, foreigners, and local personalities. This is a sensitive portrait of a young man or woman, richly painted using earth pigments and an indigenous binder such as vegetal oil and/or eggs. Ex Alan Stone.
