Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
The Yoruba of southwestern Nigeria practice elaborate divination traditions involving an array of objects, from boards to tappers to vessels. This small wooden carving is a diviner’s figure, traditionally endowed with spiritual powers by the village shaman. Diviner’s figures, or fetish figures, possess healing and protective properties and were used in spiritual consultations. It is believed that the presence of a power figure in one’s domicile dispelled evil spirits and brought good fortune.
