Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
Igbo mask featuring yellow ochre and braided fiber artfully arranged to create the illusion of a coiffure. This braided fiber is nailed onto the wooden structure of the mask. The object was found in a box among others wrapped in newspaper dated June 16, 1974. Other items in these boxes were similarly from southern Nigeria, areas caught up in the Biafran Civil War, 1967-1970. For a similar Igbo mask from the same time, see Arts d’Afrique Noire, #13, 1975:1 (adv Galerie 62).
