Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
Mixed media fetish figure from the Yaka people of southwestern Congo. Authentic, rare piece traditionally used for healing and protective purposes. The presence of a fetish in one’s domicile demonstrated the purging of evil spirits from that space. A diviner or spiritual authority would endow the object with powers through the application and use of magicalia and other consecrated properties; the efficacy of a fetish object could be determined by these supplements. The metal chain wrapped around this figure’s neck fastens to its body the foot of a monitor lizard in addition to other hanging, magical appendages. Ritual encrustation evidences the personal use of this figure in sacred rites. Featuring both earth pigments and Reckitt’s blue commercial paint.
