As mentioned in Central Nigeria Unmasked, a parallel can be drawn between attributes of standing wooden Wurkun figures and those of the Wurkun vertical masks. The geometric head, neck and “shoulder-flange construction” in particular bear resemblance to Wurkun vertical masks, whereas the figure’s facial features “correspond closely to those on kundul figures.” The sleek, elongated neck and sharply compact head are typical of these ritual figures. This 15″ figure, with its smooth patina indicating age and use, would have been used for both ceremonial and spiritual purposes.
