Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
It was not uncommon for the Igbo to carve ceremonial masks and costumes that imitated physical traits and mannerisms of white people; perhaps this white-faced mask is an example of such an artistic tradition. The mask is remarkably handsome: the symmetrical design of the slanted eyes and upper face, the fullness of the darkened lips, and the intricately carved ornamentation at the crown of the head and around the ears. The bright kaolin pigment alone distinguishes this mask; its aesthetic attributes are added assets.
