Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
This a beautiful little flute with a quirky, asymmetrical form. The hole at the bottom end is well worn. At one time, a string looped through the hole would have provided a means by which the instrument could have been carried around its owner’s neck. Flutes were part of a hunter’s regalia across West Africa, a means by which hunters could communicate between each other and their dogs over greater distances. Member of hunter societies such as the Doso carry flutes to their meetings where the instruments are played as entertainment in ensembles. Ex Tambaran Gallery, New York; estate of Katherine Cline, New York. $300
