Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
People settled in the Niger Valley thousands of years ago. Throughout much of this period, inhabitants built clay pots for cooking, carrying water and storing food. Pottery techniques and forms were invented, refined, abandoned and rediscovered. The age of this red slip vessel is unknown; however, its clean lines, surface treatment and form indicate that it was in use more than two centuries ago in the Inner Niger Delta. As the object is intact, that use may have been limited to ritual offerings of beer or food at a shrine. This is an exceptionally well crafted vessel with a gorgeous surface. It would look great in a collection of forms or vessels, or simply on a shelf with other treasures. Ex collection Joseph Knopfelmacher, before 1985.
