Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
The Ekoi are known for ritual masks and headdresses covered in animal skin, an artistic tradition “used throughout the Cross River basin,” according to Herbert Cole and Chike Aniakor in Igbo Arts: Community and Cosmos. The masks were “danced in the masquerades of men’s societies” and typically represented human heads or figures (182). The animal hide was sometimes dyed, like this mask. Its vibrant red pigment, elaborate coiffure and exquisite condition render this already rare piece a true singularity.
