Engraved Senufo heddle pulley in the form of a hornbill. Called calao in French, hornbills are one of five primordial creatures in the Senufo people’s creation myth. Many qualities render this particular bird attractive to humans: its propensity to form monogamous pairs, the involvement of both males and females in the caring for young, and the fact that the hornbill’s spring migration heralds the harvest season. The bird’s large, distinctive bill forms a dramatic down-curve — a motif in Senufo craftmanship. This pulley was once used by a weaver on a narrow strip loom.
