Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
The Jukun are an Upper Benue peoples from eastern Nigeria known for their masks and figures. This rare Jukun axe would have served utilitarian as opposed to ceremonial or ritual purposes. The wooden shaft features iron tape-wrapped at regular intervals to strengthen the shaft and even the heft of the axe. The iron used on this work is of purely indigenous origin.
