Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
This polychromed female figure is a delightful example of a typical Mumuye structural form, with legs carved a third of the height of the torso. Her squat, stocky build bears resemblance to statues and figures of the Chamba, neighbors of the Mumuye to the south. For a long time, Mumuye figures were misattributed to the Chamba and accessioned as such. Many identifications have been since modified, but the common misconception and structural likeness are evidence of the Chamba’s large dominion. The patina is lovingly worn, though the pigment and engravings on the chest, neck and head remain conspicuous.
