Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
Like the Kuba, their neighbors to the north, the Pende people treat the sharing and consumption of palm wine a a strictly social activity. Cups such as this one provided a means for the Pende to forge special relationships within the community and consolidate unity, as well as reflect status. These vessels served a social function and were valued accessories. This vessel features a classically human face on its side, with incised patterns across the surface. Cracks are consistent with age and use. Ex Sidney and Gae Berman.
