This Opa Osanyin features a propitious circle of 16 smaller birds surrounding its central bird image. A flattened, spoon-like form juts from the breast of the central bird; its purpose unclear. About one in ten Opa Osanyin have this feature. It seems reasonable to imagine that it served as a receptacle or focal point for medicinal offerings. Opa Osanyin are, after all, vital tools used by herbalists in the healing and protecting supplicants. The staff honors the Orisha Osanyin, the god of herbal medicine, and dates back to at least one hundred years.
