Delightful ritual mask from the Ogoni people of southeastern Nigeria. The mask is in the form of a goat, with curved vertical horns, ears, slanted eyes and zoomorphic nose. The tongue is playfully stuck out and the cheeks bear ornamentation. Smaller Ogoni masks like this one typically depicted goats or antelope, whereas larger masks represented predators. These masks were worn during funeral rites and ceremonial performances commemorating the seasonal harvest.
