Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
This example, like those of the Wetu family recorded by Marla C. Berns, has a central bib flanked by three vertically aligned blocks of the same texture, and on the right, one long vertical block and four nodes. Also on the right side are depictions of an arm, a dagger and a shoulder hook/ritual axe. The bottom of the bib provides room for a protruding, herniated navel and male genitalia. Although the raised impressions reference female body scarification, an Ngum-Ngumi vessel is sometimes male, and represents the commitment to perpetuating the social order (Marla Berns, Central Nigeria Unmasked: Arts of the Benue River Valley). The mouth flare of the pot has been restored.
