Montol Healing Figure

This figural form is characteristic of Montol wooden carvings: spheroidal ears, upper limb sculpted apart from the body, dramatic eyes and robust legs. The single arm is intentional: Montol figures such as this one are endowed with particular remedial powers and thus carved in response to an individual’s personal trials or imperfections. This male sports an iron bracelet on his single wrist. The scarification engravings and concave features of the face are unique attributes of this 19.5″ object from Nigeria’s Plateau State.
