These thin plaits are made from sisal fiber and beads historically obtained from traders in Angola. Wigs such as this one were traditionally worn by women for ceremonial purposes. The Mbukushu historically lived along the Okavango River in what is today Namibia, but large numbers of Mbukushu fled to Botswana during violent upheavals prior to Namibian independence.
