Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
The striking, asymmetrical hairdo of this vintage 1950s lipico is a typical feature of masks from the 1940s and early ’50s, which seems to have fallen out of favor thereafter, along with angular rendering of the face. Here the face is sensitive and supple, while other aspects of the head still owe much to the angular style of the 1940s. The sensitivities of the artist in emulating flesh bring an exceptional degree of life to the mask. Although thin-walled and well used, this mask is remarkably well preserved. Among the finest examples I have ever owned.
