Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
Dogon heddle pulley with engraved, rich brown patina. Loving use gives this object elegant reddish overtones. Weavers in West Africa employed intricately detailed heddle pulleys as an essential part of their looms, with the embellishment of such utilitarian objects often being done for the benefit of the weaver. Anthropomorphic, zoomorphic and architectonic pulleys became much sought-after collectibles among African art aficionados as early as the 1920s. The small hole atop the pulley, though part of the object’s design, was likely used by the weaver as a suspension loop.
