Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
Mipico (pl. of lipico) masks are used in performances that accompany coming of age ceremonies, such as the circumcision of young boys. Mipico masks are worn as part of a masquerade of various theatrical characters, such as soldiers, women, foreigners, and local personalities. This example, rendered in a realist manner, is from an earlier generation when married women wore labretes in their upper lip and had heavily tattooed faces. Circa late 1960s.
