Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
Katanga cross currency from the Shaba or Katanga Province of the DRC. Katanga crosses are puddle-cast copper, meaning that the artisan would have taken a wooden form or perhaps another Katanga cross, pressed it into wet sand, removed it, and into the impression poured molten copper. This form of currency was cast in various forms and sizes over the course of centuries and widely traded out of Central Africa, as far south as Great Zimbabwe.
