Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
Three-legged stools are found all across Africa. Most are low to the ground by Western standards and some double as headrests. The three-legged design allows seats to sit without rocking on uneven ground. Typically, three-legged stools are used inside and in close proximity to the home or, in the case of nomadic patoralists such as the Rendille, within the tent. Such seats are therefore more closely associated with women, although the Pokot and Karamajong men appear to carry some small three-legged stools with them during the day. The “shoes” at the bottom end of the legs are a peculiar feature of sizable proportion of Pokot three-legged stools. The purpose and meaning of them is unknown. $475
