Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
In terms of variety, perhaps no region of Africa has a richer history of musical instruments than Tanzania. The region is home to an array of thumb pianos, drums, idiophones, trumpets, zithers, harp- and fiddle-like instruments. This particular instrument, with its flat body, a continuous string, anthropomorphic finial and calabash resonator is a board zither, known by various names including bangwe and manwe. This is an older, well used instrument with beautiful pyroengraved markings on the plank. It’s likely that few, if any, Kaguru can still play such instruments. Within a generation or two no one will know its music. Acquired from the wife of Kigoma and Dar Es Salam based dealer Mussa Ruganda. $900
