Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
Janus Ekoi mask ca. 1920s depicting a male-female couple in European-influenced dress. The middle design consists of geometric openwork and a mirror. The faces, featuring scarification, bare ritually-filed teeth, a practice which was phased out over the colonial period. The kaolin applied to the mask has oxidized and interacted with the environment during humid weather, resulting in its current appearance. There is an indigenous sheet metal repair on one side.
