Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
This is a water spirit mask from the Ijo or Ijaw people of Nigeria. It is a zoomorphic-anthropomorphic composite, as the facial structure reflects that of a human’s, with all other features representing those of animals. In addition to the fishlike tail of the mask, the mask bears the long snout of a crocodile, the projecting eyes of a hippo, and the ears of a wetland antelope. The back of the mask is the headcrest which allows the piece to be worn on a dancer’s head.
