Gourd with Traces of Medicinal Material

Medicine gourds can vary in shape and color. Landraces, varieties and cultivars of bottle gourds are as diverse as the formulations they are used to store some of which penetrate the gourd from within, turning some examples oily and black or sticky and red. Often, gourds are dyed, and on occasion written on using wax resist methods as well as engraving. This sweet little gourd from Malawi has a surface swirling with color.
