Fragment of a Caryatid Grassfields Stool
Grassfields stool featuring squatting figures with geometricized limbs, creating a rhythmic motif of verticals and diagonals around the perimeter of the stool. Very old object fashioned from a single block of wood. This piece was part of a cache of African wood carvings found in the rear of a Manhattan warehouse locker, where all the objects were wrapped in newspaper dated June 16, 1974. Ex Sidney and Gae Berman.
