Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
The Somali people occupy a vast area not only within the official boundaries of the historical nation of Somalia, but also areas within Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti. The Somali are made up of five clan lineages, all but one of which were traditionally pastoralist. In addition, there are subclans and the closely related Lowland East Cushitic people, such as the Afar. Within the vast area defined as Somali, one finds variations in the traditional forms of containers, bowls and other woodenware. Some of the variations can be described as regional while others reflect the trademark style of particular ateliers. In all, there are dozens of styles of Somali headrests. This example is one of the more spare, classic types: minimal and with very elegant clean lines. $575
