Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
The Fon people, Benin’s largest ethnic group, produce powerful fetish figures known as bocio. These fetishes are consecrated objects used for ritual purposes by Fon diviners and priests as symbols of protection and good fortune. The layered patina is a result of multiple materials incorporated in the libation ceremony. Bocio are formidable extensions of one’s spiritual self, capable of prevailing over the evils of the material world as they straddle the human and mystical realms. Stylized facial features, sacrificial residue and textured patina render this 20″ bocio a fine example of Fon power objects.
