Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
This elegant, early twentieth c. headrest is from the Shona people of Zimbabwe. Most of the classic elements of Shona design are present: the figure 8 footprint, the elongated upturned saddle with dangling lugs, the zigzag chipwork, the center of the inverted pyramid motif and outstanding utilization of negative space. This headrest comes to us from the collection of the late Katherine Cline (née Crone, 1935-2020), an avid collector of utilitarian African objects and outstanding forms. According to an original receipt, which will be provided with purchase, the headrest was acquired by Cline in March 1994 from Tambaran Gallery in New York City. $1,500
