Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
Dogon/Tellem headrest with incised sun burst designs on the saddle ca.16th century or earlier. This piece is similar to an example at the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art object #75-32-1. According to the Met, “What little is known of Tellem society is based on the contents of remote chambers of Bandiagara necropoli, or collective burial sites.” The dead were buried “along with precious possessions and agricultural reserves.” Such “intimate possessions that accompanied their owners into the afterlife include headrests and stools.”
