17th-18th c. wooden Dogon headrest. Headrests and other effects of Dogon ancestors and their Tellem predecessors were secreted in caves and on ledges high in the cliffs of the Dogon escarpment in Mali. Today’s Dogon do not use headrests and they no longer occupy the villages they established in the cliff faces for protection from slave raiders and jihadist armies. Dogon headrests take on various forms of which this is among the more widespread. That said, the twin sunburst motif atop the headrest’s saddle is a rare and delightful feature. A split across the middle element of the headrest has been professionally conserved.
