Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
The Dinka of South Sudan are a cattle-herding people, which explains why this headrest has what appears to be an umbilicus or udder underneath its saddle. Additionally, each end of the saddle bears the motif of an elephant with its trunk extended upwards; the headrest comes from an area that was at one time particularly rich in elephants. The Dinka wore a lot of ivory jewelry and elephants are an evident part of the Dinka’s folklore. This large headrest or stool functioned as a portable piece of furniture, hence the leather carrying strap. African stools, and larger headrests, are typically three-legged because on uneven natural ground and earthen floors, three legs will always sit steady, whereas four legs will rock.
