Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
Hide shields with tooled, embossed surfaces and textures were found throughout Ethiopia. The fabrication of such shields involved a highly evolved sequence of steps and practiced skills. Basketo shields are distinct in that their surfaces are made up of uniform nodules arranged in a concentric pattern around a central hub. Other shields from the region may have similar bumps, or larger ones, without the concentric arrangement. The Basketo are an Omotic-speaking people from southwestern Ethiopia with an ancient history. This is a fine example of a relatively rare and beautiful form of Ethiopian shield dating to around 1900.
