Ceramic Grassfields Pot with Handle
Ceramicists in Cameroon adhere to tradition and to the demands of the ancient, complex marketplace that the Grassfields region represents. Potters here create for themselves as well as for their immediate community, kingdom and region. Tradition in this environment is paramount, but as marketplace competition is fierce, innovation in form, function and craftsmanship are rewarded. This cooking vessel, with its overarching handle, is unique. Remarkably, this vessel has survived the rigors of use, collection and export. Its condition is a further testament to the skill of its maker in crafting a strong, useful and visually appealing object. The substantial negative space created by the hand above the pot’s mouth is in and of itself a shape of transfixing beauty.
