Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
Early 20th c. or late 19th c. Boki Janus headdress. Cross River State, Nigeria. It is possible that this mask was at one time covered with hide, of which no trace remains. Janus themes are relatively common among Cross River, Ekoi and related peoples of southeastern Nigeria. Often the two visages juxtapose male and female entities, but here it is unclear whether the twinned heads are of the same or different genders. Highly abstract features with wide slit eyes reminiscent of Lega carving (eastern Congo) to which this is of course not related. Ex Minnesota, USA collection.
