Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
Three-legged stools are found all across Africa. Most are low to the ground by Western standards and some double as headrests. The three-legged design allows seats to sit without rocking on uneven ground. Typically, three-legged stools are used inside and in close proximity to the home or, in the case of nomadic patoralists such as the Rendille, within the tent. Such seats are therefore more closely associated with women, although some Karamojong men appear to carry small three-legged stools with them during the day. By carving the legs closer to the center axis of the seat, the clustered legs create an easy carry-handle, while splayed feet at their bottom enhance stability. This example is from northeastern Uganda. $425
