Baule Spirit Spouse with Body Scarification
Baule spirit spouse field collected in Côte d’Ivoire by Thomas McNemar (New York, San Francisco and Lexington, Va., USA) before 1960. Published in Unexpected Treasure: Notes from a Collector’s Journal, 1966. Rich, multilayered patina showing traces of an earlier coat of indigenous earth pigments of red ochre and kaolin. High relief keloids over much of the body including an unusual circular design in the small of the back.
