Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
Terracotta figurative sculpture, including female figures at work and men on horseback, have been found at a number of sites in the Bamana areas of Mali near Bougouni and Diola. Bankoni sculpture is typified by elongated figures often with prominent noses. Whether the Bankoni also carved wooden figures is unknown, but the similarities between Bankoni sculpture and Bamana wood carvings of the 18th and 19th centuries is striking. This head was brought to the United States from Mali in the 1970s by Joseph Knopfelmacher, who owned it until his final years. $325
