Wooden fetish from the Bangwa people of Cameroon. Fetishes like this one would be placed in a domicile and function as the protective and healing force of that space, expelling evil spirits. Sometimes fetishes were attached to musical instruments or carried around by people as talismans. On one side of this Janus figure, the face has been repeatedly rubbed, its features worn down. This is a result of human handling, either from ritual use or prolonged individual ownership.
