Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
This heddle pulley, possibly Kulango, features a serene, moon-like human face. On the body of the pulley is decorative chip work; the pulley wheel is original. Field collected prior to 1962 in Côte d’Ivoire by Thomas McNemar, who acquired the now-frowned upon habit of waxing and coloring in his heddle pulleys. Fortunately, the materials he used are largely reversible; the original patina has been restored by stripping off excessive wax.
