Ancient zoomorphic headrest with five pillars. This funerary headrest with its cave patina would have been cached in a cave on the Bandiagara escarpment for centuries. According to the Met, “What little is known of Tellem society is based on the contents of remote chambers of Bandiagara necropoli, or collective burial sites.” The dead were buried “along with precious possessions and agricultural reserves.” Such “intimate possessions that accompanied their owners into the afterlife include headrests and stools.”
