Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
This figure from the Adan people of southeastern Ghana bears a feature common among Adan sculpture: patterned red pigment. This motif was achieved in the Adan artistic tradition through the use of red earth pigment, which is made by grinding down deposits of red stone and mixing it with water and a mild binder. The paste can then be painted on carved figural forms, often in a pattern which appeared striped, like this one. The arm raised to the head is also a notably Adan characteristic. Ex Merton Simpson.
