Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
Weavers in West Africa, particularly in and around Cote d’Ivoire, employed intricately detailed heddle pulleys as an essential part of their looms. Anthropomorphic, zoomorphic and architectonic pulleys became much sought-after collectibles among African art aficionados as early as the 1920s. This Kulango pulley references the circular superstructure of ceremonial bedu masks which themselves relate to the crescent shaped horns of the African buffalo and the potent symbols of the sun and the moon. Collected in the 1960s by Thomas McNemar. Add two inches for custom base.
