Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
Masks depicting mature and young women form a large proportion of all Makonde and Makua masks. The tattoos on the forehead of this mask strongly suggest that the individual being portrayed is a mature, powerful woman. The high quality of the carving and the rendering of its mouth and ears show remarkable affinity with the ruddy-colored Makua Policeman mask elsewhere on this site. Indeed, the two were acquired together from the same exporter around 2002. Traces of pale turquoise nail polish on the surface indicate that at one time this beautiful mask was the shade of a coral sea. $700
