Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
Makonde country is too far south and east for chimpanzees, but Makonde are well acquainted with yellow babboons, the species that top the primate hierarchy in the region. Baboons often come into conflict with humans when raiding crops such as corn, bananas and fruit- and nut-bearing trees. Orphaned baboons are sometimes kept for a while as pets until they grow too large and threatening. I estimate that this particular mask dates to the 1950s-’60s. The mask has a dry surface; the wood it was carved from is lightweight and hard. Its walls are thin and its details are crisp. $675
