Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
This mask closely relates to a mask published in Alexander Bortolot’s excellent exposition catalog “Revolutions: A Century of Makonde Masquerade in Mozambique,” Columbia University, 2007: 50, pl. 37. This example is frankly a finer rendering in substantially better condition by the same artist who Bortolot determined was active between roughly 1945 and 1955. It’s altogether possible that the carver continued to produce masks through the 1950s, but his style and skill place the beginning of his career squarely in the 1940s.
