Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
This massive mask is composed of dozens of gathered and carved elements including seed pods, a formally carved mask, several figures and jig-sawed lengths of wood. The numerous elements are bound together with fiber, cloth and nails. The masked within the mask appears similar to the central mask element of regalia worn for Mmau masquerades in the Nsukka and Nri-Awka area of Igboland. Gwilym Iwan Jones (1904-1995) took images of apparently related masks between 1930 and 1946, but none were as elaborate as this example.
