Authentic Art and Ethnographic Objects From Africa / Custom Mounting Services
Numerous peoples of the Congo basin and surrounding areas carve animal effigies for traditional use in divination and as hunting charms. These zoomorphic carvings are often rather generic with regard to the species they represent. This particular example could represent a squirrel or other rodent, or a mammal such as a mongoose, civet or genet. This old, beautiful carving has a well handled patina from years of indigenous youth and sits on a stand made in the 1970s. Ex old New Jersey private collection.
